“What if I mess up?”
You might be wondering… “What would I even do? What if I mess up? I’ve never done anything like this before.”
That’s okay. You don’t need experience, confidence, or a perfect performance to make a difference. You just need a willing heart — and we’ll guide you the rest of the way.
“Welcome to Contagious Joy. Your first step into serving in a care home starts here.”
Start Simple — You Don’t Have to Do Much
You are not expected to lead everything, know everything, or perform perfectly. In fact, the most powerful thing you bring is simply this: your presence, your kindness, and your willingness to show up and share God’s love.
We’ve created three simple program options so you can choose what feels comfortable.
Choose Your Comfort Level
Songs in Action
Using music and movement to share joy.
- No practice
- No memorization
- No pressure
You won’t be put on the spot. You won’t be asked to perform alone. You’ll simply join in — and that’s enough.
Truth in Motion
Where God’s Word comes alive through interactive reading.
- No memorization required
- Hold your script the entire time
- Builds confidence — in sharing God’s Word
You don’t have to “act” — just read and participate. Many volunteers are surprised how natural this feels once they begin.
Life on Stage
Using drama to show how God works in real lives.
- Includes acting and memorization
- Done as a team — never alone
- Builds confidence step by step
“This is where teamwork takes root.”
What to Expect
So there are no surprises:
- Residents are kind and patient — and simply happy you came
- Smiles matter more than perfect words
- Mistakes are completely okay — and often forgotten quickly
“What feels like a big deal to you will feel like a blessing to the residents.”
Schedule Performances
For ease of scheduling, type “Find Care Facilities and Nursing Homes Near Me” in online search, and download the Contact Care Home Activity Director script.
Timing: most visits last about 1 hour (Songs in Action or Truth in Motion) or 1.5 hours (Life on Stage). This allows time to connect personally with residents.
Helpful tip: Repeating the same program at another care home the same day strengthens your comfort level and confidence. Please remember your memory-care residents.
Pray First
The most important thing you will do as a leader is pray.
“The harvest is great, but the workers are few. So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send more workers into His fields.” — Matthew 9:37-38
Pray for…
- Each participant
- The residents — that they would experience God’s love
- Wisdom and discernment
- Direction — in choosing a program and care home
Before you go, just take a moment: “God, help me show Your love today. In Jesus’ name, amen.” That’s enough. You don’t need perfect words — just an open heart.
A Few Simple Tips to Help You Feel Ready
- Stand near someone confident — and follow their lead
- Smile — it communicates more than words
- Speak a little louder and slower than normal
- If you feel nervous — take a deep breath and keep going
- Remember — God is with you
After the Program — The Best Part
The most meaningful moments often happen after everything is done.
- A resident may want to talk — tell them Jesus loves them
- Someone may thank you
- You might hear a story — you’ll never forget
- Some may be worried or sad — pray with them
You don’t need the perfect response. Just listen and be present.
The Truth About Your First Time
You might feel nervous walking in. But most people walk out saying, “That wasn’t as hard as I thought” — and “I’m really glad I did that.”
“Confidence doesn’t come before you start. It comes because you start.”
Our Prayer for You
Lord, calm every fear and replace it with Your peace. Remind each volunteer that they don’t need to be perfect — just willing. Use every smile, every word, and every moment to show Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
