Bubbles: A Simple Moment of Joy
Bubbles have a way of making people smile! They are simple, inexpensive, and can bring a little bit of childlike wonder into a care facility.
What you need
- Bubbles and bubble wands
- A song to play: “What a Wonderful World” by Anne Murray
How to play
- Play the song and simply blow bubbles into the room.
- Invite residents to watch, reach, point, clap, or gently pop them.
- Sit beside residents and blow bubbles toward them, giving them an opportunity to interact at whatever level is comfortable.
- Make it playful! Blow a few bubbles, pause, and see where they go. Let residents try blowing bubbles if they are able.
- Laugh when a bubble lands on someone’s hand or floats right past them.
Make it a connection
You can also connect the activity to faith with a simple thought:
- “Look at that beautiful bubble! God gives us so many little things to enjoy.”
Or simply sing along as the song plays. There is no right or wrong way to participate. The bubbles create the activity, but your presence, your smile, and your shared laughter create the connection.
For residents with limited mobility
There is no need to reach or pop the bubbles. Watching them float, shimmer, and disappear can be enjoyable all by itself.
Sometimes joy can be as simple as a bubble floating through the room—and someone taking the time to enjoy it with you.
