THE LEGEND OF THE FLOWER

Care Home Performance (15-20 minutes)

PURPOSE

To gently remind residents and performers that our greatest value is found in love, faith, and giving—not possessions.

CAST (4–6 ACTORS)

OPENING

MUSIC: Instrumental “Arabian Nights” (very low, 10–15 seconds only)

THEATER PROMPT:
Narrator enters slowly and pauses center stage. Make eye contact with residents. Smile gently. Allow time for the room to settle.

NARRATOR (center stage, calm and warm):
Welcome to The Legend of the Flower. This is a simple story about searching for happiness—and discovering that love, faith, and kindness are what truly matter.

THEATER PROMPT:
Pause for a breath. Nod slightly. Music fades off.

SCENE 1: ALADDIN’S HOME

SETTING

Two chairs and a small table. Aladdin and Jasmine sit side by side, close enough to show unity and warmth.

THEATER PROMPT:
Movements are unhurried. Actors remain visible and face the audience whenever possible.

SELLER (enters slowly, friendly tone, holding lamp at chest level so residents can see it clearly):
Good afternoon! I’ve traveled a long way and brought just a few special items.

THEATER PROMPT:
Seller may gently walk closer to the front row, showing the lamp.

ALADDIN (curious, leaning forward):
What’s that lamp?

SELLER:
An old lamp—nothing fancy. But sometimes the simplest things hold surprises.

THEATER PROMPT:
Seller shrugs lightly and smiles.

JASMINE (gentle, reflective):
Isn’t that true?

ALADDIN:
How much?

SELLER:
Just a dollar.

THEATER PROMPT:
Exchange is symbolic—slow, clear, and visible. Seller nods kindly, then exits at an easy pace.

JASMINE:
Aladdin, do you ever feel like people spend their lives chasing things—but still feel empty?

THEATER PROMPT:
Jasmine may gesture softly toward the audience, inviting reflection.

ALADDIN:
Yes. I think many people feel that way.

THEATER PROMPT:
Brief pause. Allow residents time to absorb the thought.

FRIEND (enters cheerfully):
What’s the lamp for?

ALADDIN:
I don’t know. Let’s see.

THEATER PROMPT:
Aladdin rubs the lamp slowly and deliberately, holding it outward so residents can see.

GENIE APPEARS

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie enters with gentle enthusiasm—no sudden movements. A welcoming smile is key.

GENIE:
Well hello there. You’ve awakened me.

ALADDIN:
Who are you?

GENIE:
I’m the Genie. I offer two wishes—but wisdom matters more than wishes.

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie places a hand over heart when saying “wisdom.”

FRIEND:
Wish for money!

GENIE (kind but serious):
Money can make life easier—but it doesn’t make life meaningful.

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie slowly shakes head “no,” then opens hands outward.

ALADDIN:
Still… I want to try.

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie gently tosses a few coins into Aladdin’s hands (or mimes it clearly).

ALADDIN (looking at coins):
I feel important now.

JASMINE:
Importance doesn’t come from what we own. It comes from who we are.

THEATER PROMPT:
Jasmine places a hand on Aladdin’s arm.

THEATER PROMPT:
All exit calmly as the scene transitions.

SCENE 2: LATER

THEATER PROMPT:
Aladdin sits, shoulders slightly slumped. Coins are gone.

ALADDIN:
The money didn’t last. And neither did the happiness.

JASMINE:
I guess things don’t fill the heart.

ALADDIN (looking upward, calling gently):
Okay Genie! Genie… what really matters?

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie steps forward calmly, standing slightly higher or more centered.

GENIE:
There you go, Aladdin. You are finally asking!

FRIEND:
Yeah! He has one wish left, right?

GENIE:
Yes—one more wish. Or I can offer you something more valuable.

ALADDIN:
My money was quickly gone. I want something that will last.

FRIEND:
Aladdin, wish to be king!

GENIE (firm but loving):
Only Jesus is King. Your value comes from Him—not from money or success. Because of Jesus, we are loved, forgiven, and called children of God.

THEATER PROMPT:
Genie speaks slowly. Allow pauses between phrases.

JASMINE:
Now that’s the kind of treasure that never fades.

ALADDIN (steps forward, humbled):
I was greedy. I forgot what mattered.

GENIE:
Grace is a gift. Jesus already gave everything.

CLOSING: SHARING THE FLOWERS

GENIE (gestures toward basket of flowers):
Love is meant to be shared, Aladdin!

THEATER PROMPT (IMPORTANT):

Actors move slowly and respectfully toward residents or toward volunteers assisting.
If direct contact is not possible, actors may gesture warmly from a distance.

ALADDIN (offering flower):
Thank you for being here. You matter.

JASMINE (offering flower):
God loves you.

FRIEND (smiling, offering flower):
We’re glad you’re here.

GENIE (final line, gentle and warm):
Sometimes the greatest gift is simply being present.

THEATER PROMPT:
Actors pause, smile, and make eye contact.
Hold the moment before exiting.
